Match report
Prior to the match a minutes silence was held in memory of club doctor John MacAskill who died last Saturday after a long illness. It was a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to the club for so long. This last home game of the season was a disappointment despite a good start. In seven minutes Caley Thistle took the lead thanks to an error by Darren Dods. His attempted clearance went a few yards to the feet of Richie Hart and he hammered the ball past Kevin Cuthbert from just inside the box. In 15 minutes Saints were awarded a disputed free kick on the left just outside the box Paul Hartley struck it beyond the far post, Keigan Parker crossed back across goal and Ian Maxwell headed the equaliser. Hart had a chance to make it 2-1 in 22 minutes when a Barry Robson flick set him up but his 15 yard shot was saved by Cuthberts legs. Stuart Golabek struck over the bar in 27 minutes, Robson did the same on the half hour mark then Mark Reilly shot past Mark Browns post in 34 minutes. The rest of the first half was punctuated by many offside decisions with the only real excitement being Cuthbert punching away a curling Robson corner. Paul Hartley hit over the home bar in 50 minutes then five minutes later Paul Ritchie headed wide. Saints took the lead in 57 minutes when Mark Reillys 15 yard shot was deflected past Brown after a good build-up by Keigan Parker and Paddy Connolly. A minute later a Golabek lob sent Roy McBain clear but he ran on and hit wide. In 61 minutes a sidefoot shot from Dennis Wyness was saved by Cuthbert then three minutes later he nearly took advantage of a rare error by the keeper. Cuthbert spilled the ball but recovered to block Wynesss shot. This good Caley Thistle spell continued with a Robson corner headed off the line by Reilly and substitute David Bagan shooting high from 25 yards. There was a late flurry and, with a minute of the 90 left, Cuthbert saved a Golabek shot from 22 yards. In the three minutes of added time Brown saved an angled shot from Parker then the Saints defence cleared after a long Grant Munro throw created some confusion. The last efforts came when a Bagan cross was headed away then McBains corner was cleared. Caley Thistle can no longer improve on fourth place and they now go to Falkirk as guests at the champions party.
