Motherwell 0 v 2 Inverness CT
Three Games, Three Clean Sheets and Top of the League. The Caley Jags dominated at Fir Park and came away worthy 2-0 winners, leaving Motherwell wondering what had just hit them.
Motherwell got the match underway at a slightly wet Fir Park, but it didn’t take long for Inverness Caledonian to assert themselves and put pressure on the Steelmen by forcing an early double corner, the second of which found the head of Ross Draper and had the visiting fans on their feet as it slid narrowly passed the upright.
David Raven was next up to try his luck with a shot from 20 yards which was charged down, winning ICTFC a free kick in the process. Shinnie and Tansey stepped up with a quick one two, but the resulting shot on goal from Shinnie went high of the target.
Up the other end and a slack ball back to the keeper allowed Motherwell to pounce. Stranded on the edge of the box, Brill could only look on as the ball was looped over his head. Thankfully Warren had spotted the danger and made for goal to cover, heading it off the line for Meekings to put out to safety.
Watkins broke down field from the corner, playing in Danny Williams who was unfortunate to see his shot touched wide. Warren looked to have been pulled down from the resulting corner, but still managed to get a foot on it. Not enough to trouble the Motherwell stopper and no interest from the ref in claims for a penalty.
Christie and Tansey were both denied by Twardzik before a ball in to Mckay once again had the travelling fans turning it up to 11 as it looked like he’d slid it passed the keeper, but it wasn’t to be on this occasion.
The Caley Jags were keeping the Motherwell keeper busy with shot after shot….Warren, Tansey, Watkins, Christie…Christie again (and a few others, it was hard to keep up) all lining up for a shot.
Motherwell were clearly struggling to cope, so much so that Watkins was victim of a “professional foul” when he looked ready to break….from 70 yards out.
A ball to the back post for Williams looked certain to break the deadlock, but Reid found an extra spring in his jump to nod it out for a corner. Meekings got his head on the corner and Warren tried to get on the second ball….to no avail.
Persistence and patience finally paid off as Tansey received the ball on the right, turned his man and made a beeline for goal. The ball sat up nice for him about 22 yards out and he did what he does best….driving a rocket of a shot towards goal, to the right of Twardzik who had no chance of getting anywhere near it.
HT: Motherwell 0 v 1 Inverness CT …..and deservedly so. In fact, nobody could have argued had it been a whole lot more, with Motherwell offering little threat and recording only a single shot on target.
Stuart McCall had no option but to make changes at half-time and he elected to introduce the “Sherriff”….or Ojamma as the rest of us call him. Yogi was clearly expecting it and issued instructions accordingly.
Motherwell pressed harder and faster from the restart, but ICTFC dealt with what little threat that caused….whilst still causing some of their own with Shinnie and Williams registering shots on target early doors.
After a short spell of pressure (although no shots on target) by Motherwell, ICTFC re-asserted themselves, got a foot on the ball, kept possession and were dictating the terms for how the match would be played out.
Christie, Raven…and Meekings after a wee run through the middle…all managed to get shots at goal.
Then came the first of our subs….Christie and Williams replaced by Polworth and Doran….the later taking only moments to get involved with a long run down the left before firing it low across goal. Frustratingly it didn’t find an ICTFC boot and Motherwell cleared.
Mckay was then replaced by Nick Ross who looked to have joined Watkins as a front pairing with Polworth sitting in behind.
Doran looked to have been denied a penalty when dragged down on the edge of the area after breaking through with the defender on his heels and only the keeper to beat, but the ref wasn’t interested.
Warren had a half chance with a volley that went wide, followed by Tansey who came within inches of repeating his first-half goal….all that just shortly before Doran does what he does best with a little bit of magic.
A run down the left before cutting across into the area…one on one with the defender who stands off him just enough for Doran to spot his chance, taps it to the right and then loops it round the defender and the goalkeeper into the far side of the net.
