Forres Mechanics 0
Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3
Mosset Park hosted the second of Caley Jags pre-season jaunts, in what turned out to be a sterner test than Saturday’s cruise at Keith. It was another glorious evening in Moray, and one can only hope that Terry Butcher has not sold Inverness to his new recruits on the grounds that the weather is always like this.
Inverness made changes to Saturday’s side, starting Marley Watkins and Danny Devine amongst others and giving season debuts to Foran and Draper. Esson kept his place though, and it seemed just as well early on when got down to a crisp Forres shot. You just know that Highland League sides are going to start these games at 100 miles per hour, and they managed that until the man who scores when he wants started wrecking their party plan.
Three goals in a ten minute spell gives McKay six from two games, and the Northern Ireland man looks hungry and sharp. Two finishes involved rounding the keeper after a one on one and Billy must be delighted with the start of this campaign. Butcher must be likewise pleased, especially with the ever more impressive Liam Polwarth. His contribution to McKay’s first was sublime.
The usual raft of substitutions pock marked the second half, as experimentation and injury intervened. Watkins impressive running was brought to a crashing halt and Devine was left nursing a painful back as Inverness continued to pass and play. Brill, who had replaced Esson at half time had a smart stop as a Forres forward sneaked clear and looks as if he will be a useful addition to the squad.
Next Up it's Away to Elgin on Saturday with a 3pm Kick-Off...see you all there.
REPORT: DAVIE BALFOUR
All in all, this was another useful familiarisation exercise against a side who were much more of an opponent than Saturday’s. The real challenges will start in August, however and Caley Thistle fans can approach them with some optimism. Don’t listen to me though, get yourself down to the games and see just where this year’s magical mystery tour takes us. It could be quite far you know.
