Inverness CT 2-0 Hibernian
Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League
ICT ended the season on winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hibs. Goals from Greg Tansey and Jonny Hayes rounding off a less than memorable season but all the same a nice win to bow out the season to and now the preparation for next season starts now.
Terry made three changes from the team that beat St Mirren last week with Roman Golobart, Josh Meekings and Aaron Doran being replaced by Ross Tokely, Thomas Piermayr and Billy Mckay. Pat Fenlon made a host of changes to the side that secured safety against Dunfermline and with one eye on the Scottish Cup final ICT looked favourites to take this one.
The first half lacked any real quality with both sides guilty of giving the ball away. Hibs had one decent effort when George Francomb's shot was pushed behind by Ryan Esson but apart from that the first half was non-eventful.
Half Time: Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0-0 Hibernian
The next 45 was better with Hayes testing debutant Paul Grant in the Hibernian net before Kenny Gillet who hasn't had a deserved goal all season smashed one over from 30 yards.
The opening goal came just after the hour mark when Hayes was up-ended after a strong run just outside the area. Greg Tansey, a man who was said to be a “free kick specialist”, finally got his first goal from a free kick after 38 games. The Scouser curling in a great goal past Grant and the midfielder was mobbed by his team mates in the resulting celebration.
It was 2-0 not long after, Mckay with a cross in for Sutherland which was cheekily punched away by Matt Doherty but the referee spotted it and after a brief discussion over who would take the penalty Hayes stepped up to fire it into the corner in what might have been his last ICT goal, hopefully not though.
It was nearly three when Ian Murray's header seemed to be heading for the back of his own net but the ball just went wide of the goal.
ICT held on for the clean sheet and the three points which means they finish ahead of Hibernian for the second year running. As the players soaked up the applause after the game and Ryan Esson and Graeme Shinnie both picked up individual awards for their great displays this season Richie Foran made it clear that he expects a better season when the 2012/13 campaign kicks off. Terry also believed that the side will come back stronger next season and hopefully with some fresh faces and that bit more experience we can come back a much stronger side.
