Dundee 1

Remember the old pools coupons that your Dad filled out every week, where the holy grail was amassing enough score draws to get to a certain points total? They would love Caley Thistle right now.

Destined to drop little to no points, but finding three hard to come by they must be the most frustrating team on earth (to Dundee United at least!) The dark blue half of Dundee were the latest to roll northward in search of success, and they left as frustrated as the rest.

Inverness started with the surprise inclusion of Nick Ross – or at least he was surprised – and Aaron Doran as they looked to close control and direct running as the way through the Dundee defence.

150404 dundee doran 001If you were at the first instalment of this fixture way back in august, you might recall Dundee had two shots on goal in that first half. They had none at all in this one.

As John Hughes said: "We definitely deserved something from the match. In the first half we got back to doing what we do well - we were patient with the ball and tested the keeper a few times. Lady luck deserted us a little bit. We were looking for a bit more in our combination play with Aaron, Nick, Ryan and Marley to make the most of our total domination in the first half." That would have been fair, but only Doran created much, fizzing a couple of neat strikes just wide.

A somewhat bedraggled Dundee changed things in the second half and quite amazingly took the lead in 52 minutes through Clarkson. He pinged a neat wee finish past Esson after an episode of pinball in the Inverness box.

That seemed to galvanise Caley Thistle, and Dundee’s lead lasted barely 90 seconds. A clearly irritated Graeme Shinnie breenged into the area and swiped a sublime finish past Bain in the Dundee goal.

"I thought the whole game was played in their half. But in the first 20-25 minutes of the second half they were on top. Their shape was better and we struggled to adjust. They scored with their first shot on target but we showed great spirit and character to go straight down the other end and score" was Hughes appraisal of the 90 minutes and it’s hard to disagree. It’s a point and it might be the point that sees Inverness in the Europa League for the first time in their short history. Who knows?
