It had to happen at some point this season, and now Inverness can put that first defeat of the season behind them. After contributing hugely to a game that showed everything good about Scottish football they will be disappointed, but they have much to take solace from.

On an Indian summer’s day, Caley Thistle made one change from the pre-split win against Kilmarnock with Gary Warren returning to central defence, Danny Williams dropping to the bench. Partick started the brighter, but Inverness took the lead in 13 minutes from an Aaron Doran strike past Fox after he had been released by a quite outrageous dummy from David Raven.

140913 partick meekings 001It was a lead held for a mere 6 minutes when the impressive Lawless cut inside Meekings and smashed the ball past Brill, who looked to have been unsighted and saw it late. If you were going to lose your first goal of the season, this was no bad one to lose it to. Less impressive was Partick’s second 4 minutes later. A floated ball from a Higginbotham gave a poorly marked Osman the time to bullet a header past Brill and Inverness were behind.

140913 partick mckay 002The test of a side is how they react to adversity and in the second half inverness played some sublime football. Billy Mckay - normally deadly - scorned a trio of chances in the second period through a combination of fine goalkeeping by Fox and a bit of ill fortune.

Christie threw his hat in the ring with a couple of attempts as did the increasingly impressive Marley Watkins. Lauded for his speed, his strength on the ball was spectacular at times and he was unlucky for a shot into the net to be disallowed.

140913 partick christie 001It would have brought the scores level and there was every indication that inverness would then have gone on to win. Sometimes, though these things will haunt you and so it proved as a quite brilliant break by Stevenson and Lawless allowed Higginbotham to blast a 25 yard strike past Brill.

Inverness were left with little choice but to press in an attempt to pull a goal back but in the end Partick coped and really should have added a barely credible gloss to the result with a penalty which Brill had only to flop on to save in 90 minutes.

As John Hughes said “In the first half, we took the lead and I thought there was chances there to go and score more goals.

140913 partick hughes 001"Billy Mckay was unlucky a few times, Gary Warren with a header, Marley Watkins with a strike at the goalie. Second half, the whole style of the game changes, Partick could sit in and hit us on the counter attack and, all credit to them, they did that. They scored a wonderful third goal”

There’s a great chance now to make immediate amends in Glasgow as we visit Rangers in the League Cup. They will be up for this match, but I wonder if Ally McCoist will enjoy watching it as much as he enjoyed watching on Saturday? We’ll soon find out.
